For centuries, parents have made their decision about circumcision based on religious, cultural and medical considerations. Nowadays however, many physicians do not recommend it for newborn males.
Circumcision Melbourne should only be performed on healthy infants who are not prematurely born or have congenital abnormalities or blood problems. Furthermore, there should be no history of hypospadias or urinary tract infections for the baby to ensure its safety.
Procedure
Circumcision is a medical procedure that removes the foreskin (extra skin) around the end of the penis. This can be performed in either an office setting or hospital.
Newborns may feel pain during the procedure, so the practitioner will numb the area with a local anesthetic. Usually this is accomplished either with a needle or by applying cream onto the affected area.
Circumcision can be safer when performed by an experienced health professional and close monitoring provided in the days following the procedure.
However, having the foreskin removed does reduce the risk of urinary tract infection and has been linked with a lower risk for certain sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV. However, the overall effectiveness of newborn male circumcision in preventing these infections remains uncertain; most studies have come from countries that do not routinely perform this procedure.
Preparation
Circumcision is a medical or aesthetic procedure that removes the foreskin from a baby’s penis. It may be done for cosmetic, hygiene or medical reasons or to uphold religious traditions.
Typically, the procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the technique employed. Afterward, a doctor applies gauze with petroleum jelly over the area in order to protect it from rubbing against the diaper.
Newborns may be strapped down during the procedure and their arms and legs swaddled. The physician can also numb the area with an injection or cream.
Circumcision sites usually heal quickly. The tip of the penis may appear slightly red or bruised for a few days after surgery.
Anesthetic
Male circumcision (MC) is one of the oldest and most widespread surgeries worldwide, involving surgical removal of the sleeve skin that covers the head (glans) of a penis. It’s typically done for religious, cultural or medical reasons.
MC, though widely performed, can often be a painful procedure. Researchers are working hard to find ways to reduce the discomfort experienced by newborns during circumcising.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies receive anesthetic to minimize discomfort during surgery. They may also be given a sucrose-dipped pacifier or acetaminophen to help them relax and cope with the procedure.
Clamp or ring
Circumcision involves placing a clamp or ring around the head of the penis to trim away excess skin, commonly referred to as circumcision.
The Mogen clamp is the most widely used method of newborn male circumcision. This involves administering a local anesthetic and using straight hemostats to expose the penis glans.
After obtaining consent, the baby is placed on a flat surface and local anesthetic administered. The glans is then exposed and secured using the Mogen clamp.
The Gomco clamp is another option and similar to the Mogen clamp, however it requires multiple parts in various sizes. If a provider accidentally uses an incorrect part, serious consequences can ensue.
Recovery
Your baby’s recovery after circumcision depends on the method your doctor used and how quickly he heals. Most circumcisions are performed between 24-72 hours after delivery, and your healthcare provider will explain all details of the surgery as well as answer any queries you might have.
Your physician will apply a bandage or ring around the tip of your son’s penis to stop bleeding and remove its foreskin. This could be done by either a doctor, mohel (medical officer), nurse in an office setting.
Your doctor will also give you instructions on how to care for your child’s wound after circumcision. Keep the area clean by wiping away any stool that comes into contact with it. If the wound becomes wet, give him or her a sponge bath until it heals completely.
